Electric scooters are everywhere in New Zealand — from daily commuters to weekend fun. But when your scooter starts losing range or won't hold a charge, you need the right replacement battery. Here's what to know before you buy.
How Electric Scooter Batteries Work
Most electric scooters in NZ run on either sealed lead acid (SLA) or lithium-ion battery packs. The battery pack is typically made up of multiple 12V batteries wired in series to reach the scooter's operating voltage — usually 36V, 48V, or 60V.
Common configurations:
- 36V system — 3× 12V batteries in series
- 48V system — 4× 12V batteries in series
- 60V system — 5× 12V batteries in series
Lead Acid vs Lithium: Which Is Right for You?
| Lead Acid (SLA/AGM) | Lithium-Ion | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $150–$300 per set | $500–$1,200+ per set |
| Weight | Heavier (adds 15–25kg) | 60–70% lighter |
| Lifespan | 300–500 charge cycles | 800–1,500 cycles |
| Range | Shorter per charge | Longer per charge |
| Best for | Budget replacement, short commutes | Daily riders, maximum range |
The bottom line: Lead acid is significantly cheaper upfront and works well for casual use. If you ride daily and need maximum range, lithium pays for itself over time — but SLA gets most riders where they need to go at a fraction of the price.
Choosing the Right Replacement Battery
1. Check Your Voltage
Your scooter's voltage must match exactly. A 48V scooter needs a 48V battery pack — no exceptions. Check the label on your existing batteries or your scooter's user manual.
2. Check the Amp-Hours (AH)
Capacity is measured in amp-hours. Higher AH = longer range. Most NZ electric scooters use 12V 20AH batteries (like the 6-DZF-20). You can upgrade to higher AH if the battery physically fits, but never go lower than the original spec.
3. Check the Physical Size
Measure your battery compartment. Scooter battery bays are tight — even a few millimetres can matter. The DZF-20 measures 181mm × 77mm × 167mm and fits most standard Chinese-made electric scooters sold in NZ.
4. Replace the Full Set
Always replace all batteries in the pack at once. Mixing old and new batteries causes uneven charging, reduces range, and shortens the life of the new batteries.
Electric Scooter Battery Prices NZ 2026
| Battery Type | Voltage/Capacity | Price per Battery | Typical Set Cost (48V) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6-DZF-20 (EV SLA) | 12V 20AH | ~$80–$100 | $320–$400 |
| AGM Deep Cycle | 12V 20–35AH | $100–$180 | $400–$720 |
| Lithium-Ion Pack | 48V 20AH (complete) | — | $600–$1,200 |
How to Extend Your Scooter Battery Life
- Charge after every ride — don't let SLA batteries sit discharged
- Store indoors — NZ garages get cold in winter, which reduces capacity
- Use the original charger — mismatched chargers damage cells
- Don't deep discharge — ride home before the battery is completely flat
- Check monthly — look for swelling, corrosion, or loose terminals
