Does Your BMW Need AGM?
Yes, if your BMW has start-stop technology (engine shuts off at traffic lights). This includes most BMWs sold in NZ from 2012 onwards. AGM batteries handle the constant start-stop cycling — a standard MF battery will fail prematurely.
How to check: Look at the label on your current battery. If it says AGM, you must replace with AGM. If it says MF or standard, a standard DIN battery is fine.
BMW Battery Registration — Do You Need It?
From 2002 onwards (E65 7 Series, then E60 5 Series, then most models), BMW's Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) monitors your battery's health. When you replace the battery, the car's computer needs to know it's new — this is called battery registration.
What happens if you skip it?
- The car still thinks the old battery is installed
- Charging system won't calibrate correctly
- New battery may overcharge and fail early
- Comfort features (auto start-stop, seat memory restore) may not work
How to register:
- Any BMW dealer or independent European specialist can do it in minutes
- DIY with a BMW-compatible OBD2 scanner (Carly, BimmerCode, ISTA)
- Cost: $0 (DIY) to ~$50 at a workshop
Pre-2002 BMWs don't need registration — just swap and go.
Where Is the Battery in a BMW?
BMWs are quirky about battery placement:
- Under the bonnet: Most 3 Series (E36, E46), older 5 Series
- In the boot (trunk): E90/E92 3 Series, E60 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, Z4
- Under the rear seat: E39 5 Series (1997–2003), older 7 Series
If the battery is in the boot, there will still be a positive terminal under the bonnet for jump-starting — look for a red cap near the engine bay.
