Choosing the right car battery size in New Zealand can be confusing. Japanese and European vehicles use completely different sizing systems, and picking the wrong size means it simply won't fit your car. This guide covers every battery size you'll encounter on NZ roads.
Understanding Battery Size Codes in NZ
New Zealand's vehicle fleet is dominated by Japanese imports (Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, Subaru) and a growing number of European vehicles (BMW, VW, Mercedes, Audi). Each uses a different battery sizing standard:
- JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) — used by Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Mitsubishi
- DIN (European Standard) — used by BMW, VW, Mercedes, Audi, Skoda, Volvo
Japanese Battery Sizes (JIS)
NS40 (40B19L / 40B19R)
The smallest standard car battery. Fits compact cars like the Toyota Vitz, Suzuki Swift, Honda Fit/Jazz, Nissan March and many small hatchbacks. CCA ratings typically range from 300-340CCA. The "L" or "R" suffix indicates terminal position — check which side your positive terminal sits on before ordering.

NS60 (55B24L / 55B24R)
The most popular battery size in NZ. Fits Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Toyota RAV4, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Lancer and many mid-size sedans. Standard MF versions offer 430CCA, while EFB start-stop versions deliver 420-460CCA.

European Battery Sizes (DIN)
European cars use the DIN numbering system. The number roughly indicates capacity in amp-hours:
| DIN Size | Approx Ah | Common Vehicles | Price From |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIN44 | 44Ah | Smart ForTwo, Fiat 500 | $220 |
| DIN55 | 55Ah | VW Golf, Audi A3, BMW 1 Series | $230 |
| DIN65 | 65Ah | BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class | $300 |
| DIN66 | 66Ah | VW Passat, Audi A4, Skoda Octavia | $300 |
| DIN75 | 75Ah | BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class | $340 |
| DIN77 | 77Ah | Audi A6, BMW X3 | $340 |
| DIN100 | 100Ah | Mercedes S-Class, BMW X5, Range Rover | $390 |

What Does CCA Mean?
CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) measures how much power a battery delivers in cold conditions. Higher CCA = easier cold starts. In Auckland's mild climate, CCA matters less than in colder regions, but always match or exceed your vehicle's minimum CCA requirement. A higher CCA battery is fine — a lower one could leave you stranded on a cold morning.
Standard MF vs EFB vs AGM — Which Do You Need?
- Standard MF (Maintenance Free) — suits most conventional petrol and diesel vehicles. The most affordable option.
- EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) — required for vehicles with start-stop technology (i-Stop, ISG). Better cycling performance than standard MF.
- AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) — required for European start-stop vehicles and hybrid cars. Premium performance and longer lifespan.
Important: If your vehicle came with an EFB or AGM battery, you must replace it with the same type or higher. Downgrading to standard MF will cause premature failure.
