If your car has start-stop technology (the engine cuts off at traffic lights and restarts when you lift the brake), you need either an EFB or AGM battery — a standard battery won't last. But which one? This guide explains the difference and helps you choose.
What Is an EFB Battery?
EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is an upgraded version of the traditional flooded battery. It uses a polyester scrim bonded to the positive plate surface, which holds the active material in place during repeated charge-discharge cycles.
Key features:
- Handles 2-3x more charge cycles than standard batteries
- Designed for Japanese and Korean start-stop vehicles (Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai)
- More affordable than AGM — typically $150-$400 depending on size
- Adequate for mild start-stop duty (i-Stop, ISG systems)

What Is an AGM Battery?
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) uses fibreglass mat separators that absorb the electrolyte. This design is completely sealed, vibration-resistant, and can handle far more deep cycling than EFB.
Key features:
- Handles 3-5x more charge cycles than standard batteries
- Required for European start-stop vehicles (BMW, VW, Mercedes, Audi)
- Required for hybrid vehicle 12V systems
- Higher price point — typically $300-$560
- Superior vibration resistance and longer lifespan (5-7 years)

AGM vs EFB: Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | EFB | AGM |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle life | 2-3x standard | 3-5x standard |
| Vibration resistance | Good | Excellent |
| Price range (NZ) | $150-$400 | $300-$560 |
| Typical lifespan | 4-5 years | 5-7 years |
| Spill-proof | No | Yes |
| Japanese start-stop | Yes | Yes (overkill) |
| European start-stop | No | Yes (required) |
| Hybrid vehicles | No | Yes (required) |
| Charge acceptance | Good | Excellent |
Which Does Your Car Need?
You need an EFB if:
- Your car has i-Stop or ISG (Mazda, Toyota, Suzuki, Hyundai)
- Your vehicle originally came with an EFB battery
- You want start-stop capability at a lower cost
You need an AGM if:
- Your car is a European make with start-stop (BMW, VW, Mercedes, Audi)
- You drive a hybrid vehicle (Toyota Aqua, Prius, Camry Hybrid)
- Your vehicle originally came with an AGM battery
- You want maximum lifespan and performance
The Upgrade Rule
You can upgrade EFB → AGM, but never downgrade AGM → EFB.
If your car came with an EFB battery, you can install an AGM for better performance and longer life. But if your car came with AGM, you must replace with AGM — the vehicle's charging system is calibrated for AGM's different voltage profile. Downgrading will cause the battery to overcharge and fail prematurely.
Similarly, never install a standard MF battery in a start-stop vehicle. Standard batteries cannot handle the cycling demands and will fail within 12-18 months.
